This is Chapter 22 excerpted from my book Money: Understanding and Creating Alternatives to Legal Tender (Chelsea Green 2001). It describes the design of a currency that is intended to solve two problems at once. It helps a community to create employment for young people while providing the community with a circulating local currency that supplemts the supply of scarce government money.
