I have long maintained that the Swiss WIR Economic Circle Cooperative, as originally conceived and operated, was the most successful and best example of an honest moneyless exchange system. It was based on the mutual credit clearing of obligations incurred by small- and medium-sized businesses in the course of their day-to-day trading with one another. But over time, the WIR morphed into a conventional bank whose primary business has become, like all the other banks, the creation of interest-bearing debt by granting Swiss franc loans.
